Feedback Service

I work as a playwright, dramaturge, workshop facilitator and theatre director and yes, occasionally actor.  Through

  • my own writing,
  • my dramaturgy work and
  • my teaching experience,

I have come across a wide variety of plays, ideas, approaches and understandings of writing for the stage. I have supported writers in writing their own plays and have been at the head of collaborative writing projects.

If you are a writer looking for in-depth feedback, some writing advice or just someone to read your stage or radio play so you can get a sense of how well you have achieved what you set out to do, you have come to the right place.

Here are the two feedback packages available:

Individual face to face feedback session over a cup of coffee lasting up to one hour. (If meeting in person is not possible, the session can be over Skype, meaning we’d have to make our own coffee. But I make an awesome macchiato, so that’s fine with me!)

The structure of my feedback is based on a dramaturgical analysis of the draft you send me. Our session will consist of

  • my general and specific in-depth feedback
  • your questions/specific concerns
  • constructive discussion about your writing results and process
  • practical advice for a rewrite

You might disagree with my feedback. You might even decide to make a case for your writing, but my feedback is always constructive. The way I see it, playwriting is both, a craft and an art-form, so there are no absolute rights or wrongs. However, having your own rules challenged can help you formulate exactly what you are trying to do and do it better.

In this feedback session, I will examine the plot, characters, theme, structure, style and language of your play and look at how you could make all these aspects of your writing richer and deeper.

Option COFFEE will cost you £100*.

Please email me to agree on the day and time. Most of the year, the sessions can be arranged within 2-3 weeks. You will need to make your payment at least 1 week prior to the agreed date of the session.

Individual face to face feedback session (or Skype alternative) as above AND app. 2-3 pages of written feedback. This can be useful if you want to refer to any of my comments when you are in the process of rewriting or if you’re not good at making notes during our session.

As the nature of my face-to-face sessions is dialogical (you get to ask questions or are asked to answer some), my written feedback often covers more ground and is more systematic in structure. This is especially useful for writers with less experience of working with a dramaturge.

Option COFFEE AND STAIN will cost you £125*.

There is nothing quite as satisfying as getting your play submission- or production-ready. I am passionate about helping you reach your writing goal.

My feedback is generous but as a writer myself, I respect that writers all have plenty of ideas, so you can rest assured that I will not try to write your play for you. I am here to help you develop your own ideas, not introduce mine. I might propose some tools and tricks you could use and who knows you might even end up with something you could use later in life. You know the one about teaching a hungry man to fish … well that!

Here are some testimonials from other writers I have helped in the past;

I myself am quite a chatty writer, so I am generous in giving feedback and supporting other writers and here is what some of them have said about my feedback service:

“Thanks so much for such perceptive and constructive feedback.”

“It was a really useful experience. At the moment I am taking time to consider what changes are necessary before plunging in to a rewrite.”

*These fees are for scripts of up to app. 80 pages. If your script is significantly longer or shorter, get in touch via e-mail (either attaching your script or a description of it) and you will be sent a quote.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
